Chiropractic Myths vs Reality

Myths vs reality

You won’t believe some of the questions we have been asked about chiropractic in clinic over the years. If you believe that the popping noise you hear when receiving an adjustment is something cracking…keep reading!

Myth 1: “Chiropractors just crack your back.”

Reality: Chiropractic is about improving how your spine, joints, and nervous system function.

Adjustments are just one tool we use and they’re highly precise and much gentler than people expect. We also use mobilisation, muscle work, rehab, ergonomic advice, and more.

Myth 2: “The popping sound means something is cracking.”

Reality: It’s just gas releasing from the joint space!

It’s called cavitation. It’s normal, safe, and not necessary for a successful adjustment. Some very effective adjustments make no sound at all.

Myth 3: “Chiropractic isn’t safe.”

Reality: Chiropractic care is considered very safe when performed by a trained, regulated professional.

UK chiropractors are statutorily regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). Every assessment includes checks for red flags, and treatment is always tailored to the individual.

Myth 4: “Once you start, you have to go forever.”

Reality: You’re always in control of your care.

Some people come short-term for relief. Others love the benefits and choose ongoing wellness care, just like going to the gym or getting regular massages. It’s your decision. However, for optimal outcomes, we do recommend maintenance appointments.

Myth 5: “Chiropractic is only for back pain.”

Reality: We help with neck pain, headaches, knee pain, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, joint restriction, pregnancy-related pelvic pain, posture issues, and SO much more.

If it involves movement, biomechanics, or the spine… we probably have something to offer. However, if you are unsure whether we can help, we offer a FREE 15-minute screening appointment for you to come in and chat with one of our chiropractors!

Myth 6: “Adjustments must be rough or painful to work.”

Reality: They shouldn’t be painful or uncomfortable!

We adjust newborns, pregnant patients, athletes, and older adults, each with completely different techniques.

Myth 7: “Chiropractic and medical care don’t mix.”

Reality: We happily co-manage with GPs, midwives, physios, and other healthcare professionals.

It’s not either-or. We often work with other healthcare professionals and write referral letters when necessary.
